There are many ways that caring individuals can contribute to humanity, but few require as little time and effort as World Community Grid. It is a truly breakthrough project that can change the lives of hundreds of millions of people around the globe.

World Community Grid is a huge and growing network of over one million individual computers. Working together, they are providing scientists with tremendous computational power — equivalent in size to the world's 8th largest supercomputer — to accelerate their research on some of the world's most critical problems, including human disease, world hunger and climate change.

Here's how you can help make a difference and join World Community Grid:
Individuals download a simple and secure program. This program detects when your computer is idle*, e.g., when you're out for lunch or in a meeting. During these times, your computer requests research work from World Community Grid's server. It then performs computations on this data and sends the results back. You don't have to do anything at all, and it's completely safe.

Because the work is split into small pieces that are analyzed simultaneously, research time is being slashed from years, to months and even days.

For example, a project that helped scientists learn more about cancer was completed in just months on World Community Grid. Using conventional computing resources, it would have taken approximately 100,000 years to complete the research.
