Alien Overlords Poised to Reveal Themselves

Popular Mechanics UFO Cover 2004In case you didn't hear it the first time, most world governments already have alien (yes, SPACE-type and not "illegal" human-type) invasion contingency plans in place and are not afraid to use them. Many scientists agree that it's no longer a matter of "if" it is going to happen but it is "when" it is going to happen. Are you ready for our Alien Overlords to appear?

Like there is any defense against a civilization capable of traveling at the light of speed or faster! (Because that is needed to cross those distances, isn't it?)

Resistance is futile.
I like to think of the possibility that they may actually be benevolent and kind and bring us all sorts of great technology like the next generation of gaming consoles and cures for diseases like AIDS and Cancer.

Yes, that's the difference between the E.T. and the Independence Day generation...

I cannot say I agree with the idea of a generational difference between the two. ET is one of a select few films that show aliens in a pleasant light. I agree with the earlier comment that we'd have little to no defense against a civilization that could find its way here, but that also begs the question of why? What real interest would a civilization that advanced have with us? There's really nothing that our planet or people offer that would be of great interest, as far as I can see. There are billions of planets with similar resources to our own. I think the only reason we conceive of them as conquering overlords is for dramatic effect. A story is much more interesting when there is overwhelming conflict to be overcome, and people get that warm, fuzzy feeling when characters can put aside their differences and work for the greater good.

All that said, I don't see an invasion coming soon. And I am a much firmer believer that any outside contact would be both pleasant and beneficial.

Hey, Young Whippersnapper... Don't go all movie generational on me now. I can be just as fatalistic and dystopian as the next Orwellian Half-Life lovin' dude or dudette.
